What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is an altered state of awareness or perception in which the body is highly relaxed and the mind is sharply focused and receptive to therapeutic suggestion.
Hypnosis under various names has been used through out history. The term hypnosis was coined by James Braid M.D. in 1841. The American Medical Association approved of the use of hypnosis as an effective therapeutic technique in 1958.
What is it like?
With the guidance of a hypnotist, you easily enter into a very pleasant, very aware, very relaxed state. When very relaxed, the mind can allow suggestions to be accepted and changes to be made at a very deep level.
As a subject you are always an active participant in the hypnotic experience. You have complete control over the suggestions you accept. The more willing you are to accept the suggestions with desire and strong positive expectations the more effective the process.
Who Is In Control?
One of the major myths about hypnosis is that you will lose consciousness. Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness but you do not become unconscious. You will be highly aware at all times and understand everything that the hypnotist is saying.
If you wish for any reason to terminate the hypnotic state, you may do so simply by opening your eyes. You cannot be made to do anything against your will. You always have control.
How Long Does It Take?
It is not unusual to see dramatic results in a very short period of time. Treatment may be as short as one or two sessions for such things as specific phobias. Most often results can be obtained in three to ten sessions. There are those that enjoy regular sessions as a form of relaxation or stress release.
The initial session may take one and half hours. Subsequent sessions are one hour in length.
